*Please note that if you are presenting on November 18, Knowledge to Action Day, you may receive additional guidelines from the Implementing Best Practicies Initiative.
Oral presentations should be limited to 12 minutes to ensure all presenters have enough time to share their findings and allow time for questions and comments from the audience. Here are some guidelines:
If you plan to use a PowerPoint presentation, please limit it to 12-15 slides or approximately one slide per minute of presentation time. Note there is no standard template.
Please name your file “lastname_abstract#” e.g. smith_101.ppt.
Bring a copy with you on a memory stick in case of any last minute changes or technical difficulties.
The conference organizers will not provide handouts. If you would like to provide handouts, you should prepare 100 copies in advance as the hotel business center will be the only facility available.
Authors of these presentations are asked to forward their written papers (in PDF format) by November 1 to info@fpconference2009.org.
Note that sessions will fill on a first come-first serve basis. The session rooms hold 100-150 people.
Submitted abstracts will be included in the printed program. The presentations made at the conference will be available on the website in PDF format after the conference.
Poster Presentation Guidelines
At the Family Planning Conference there will be wall dividers that will be demarcated into individual poster areas which will be numbered. As a presenter, you will receive a pre-assigned number and date and time for your poster. Your poster can be displayed for up to half a day but you (or your co-author) will be asked to be in front of your poster during a one-hour time period to interact with viewers.
During this one-hour period, authors can hold discussions with conferees circulating among the posters. Many authors find it helpful to present a brief introduction to answer obvious questions about the poster and use the remainder of the time for discussions with viewers. The author (or his/her representative) should remain by the poster board for the duration of the viewer-interaction session.
Poster Schedule
The following are the dates, times, themes and public interaction periods for the 5 poster sessions. Also listed are the times when the poster can be mounted and dismounted. You will be notified as to the location for posters when you pick up your registration materials.

No audiovisual equipment is permitted for poster presentations. If you would like to have your poster made available after the conference on the website:
Save your poster as a PowerPoint or graphic file (.jpg, .gif)
Name your file “poster_lastname_abstract#” e.g. poster_smith_101.ppt.
All materials should be prepared in advance and brought to the Conference. There will not be facilities on site for printing or composing the poster.
The poster area will be 4 feet wide by 3 feet tall.
Tape, thumbtacks, and other adhesive supplies will be available on site for mounting the posters.
Any posters not removed by 7pm Wednesday, November 18, will be discarded.
Poster boards will be numbered and a numbered list of posters will be posted. Please mount your poster in the location with your number.
Materials should include the title of the presentation and the list of authors. Letters in the title should be at least 1 inch high. Bring all illustrations needed -- figures, tables, color photographs, charts. It may be helpful to consult an artist about the display.
The material should be well labeled and legible from a distance of 2 yards (1.8m). Lettering should be bold. If you will be posting typed material, use a large font size (20 to 24 point font) on white, pale yellow or cream-colored non-glossy paper. Use 1-inch margins. Avoid use of fancy fonts. Use upper and lowercase letters. Simple serif fonts such as "Times New Roman" are easier to read than sans (without) serif fonts such as "Geneva".
Two useful websites with general suggestions on how to effectively display your research on a poster are:
Title - Prepare a banner for the top of the poster indicating the title, author(s) and affiliation(s). Lettering on the banner should be at least one inch (2.54 cm) high.
Illustrations - Figures should be clear, visible graphics. Each figure or table should have a heading in large typeface. Detailed information should be provided in a legend below in smaller typeface. Since there is text accompanying a graphic, the legend should describe concisely its contents.
Technical content – Follow the abstract outline in as much as possible: 1) Background/Significance; 2) Research Question/Intervention; 3) Methodology; 4) Data; 5) Findings; and 6) Contributed knowledge/Lessons Learned
Layout - For easy viewing, arrange materials in columns rather than in rows. The sequence of figures or graphs should be indicated with numbers or letters. Avoid long passages of text and use graphs and diagrams when possible.
